Online tutorials

first of all, a very short article on the Psychotropic Houses

Prompt

It would indeed be very interesting to create a space (place/apparatus/device...?) which actually does control people.

You will have to study in depth the notion of control, especially control in urban environment, and control by political powers.
Here a list of articles to read :

Now, how do you approach this site? The elements there? Are you interested in a specific craft, a system to use, a material, a physical property?...

What would this structure relate to?
How can the installation on the given site reach larger territories? have a larger impact?
Does it need to, or would it be a personal experience, a sort of self-realization (the awareness of some fears and reflexes in us, which, when stimulated ....)

Pimmy
Now that you have these 2 interests clearly in place, it is time to create the link between them.
You will not simply propose a vehicle, and not merely a mythical beast either.
Rather your vehicle (which could also be a spiritual vehicle, and even both spiritual (psychological) and physical) will be developed as you create the god-monster of the pond.
You have identified the characteristics of these animals, now it is time to see the monstrous hybrid (the mythical beast we talked about already) that you can create from those. Like the half-man-half-horse, half-fish-half-bird (and Garuda, the vehicle of Shiva).... but in your case, a quarter-pigeon-quarter-squirrel-quarter....
Now, work on drawing them (maybe modeling them) extracting the organs which could be useful for the vehicle (useful and also evocative, or simply decorative), and you can make several proposition (play with it!), even looking at the insects on the site ...
Then you will continue and create a vehicle from this work (but do not start by it, your proposal will get super poor (as the one you refer to!) if you do so) - and then we will start thinking about what could be the belief (the mythical story to create or rather to extract from the current situation) around this beast.

A
Your intentions and researches already are extremely interesting - really develop them into a proposal now!

How do you get people involved ("mind/perception/self") with this phenomenon?
(How) would they start climbing up? How many minutes, hours, days, months... would they spend ascending?
How do you sustain their lives, through destruction and creation?

Have you started working on the physical structure enabling the ascension and possibly the change of water's state?  Are you looking at technologies to create the different types of cloud? Or speculating on what is already (naturally) there..? Or both? Or deforming / exaggerating / experimenting / modifying / inventing other types of cloud...?

Then, when and how does the virtual reality take place?
At this altitude, and even before actually, the body has to adapt, in phases/pauses of a certain duration (i know it from my recent experience during the workshop in India...!) You should be aware of the psychological effects of being at such altitude and make use of them (perception and interpretations will be altered from the usual state we are in on the ground - the lack of oxygen also has strong effects on us - like being under the influence of specific drugs)
Actually you will probably need to provide specific drugs (drugs are, before anything, medicine) in order for people to survive (psychologically and physically).
Make the best use of it and include it in your proposal (as a plausible experience, not necessarily a suicidal one!)

Dream
Good summarize of extensive research!
Maybe you spent a little too much time spent on de-mystifying (valuable attitude though, but rarely productive)... unless you would like to make this part of your project?
What are you working on now?
How will you develop this research? What physical properties (of water, of the moon (light, attraction...) can you manipulate? Into what kind of experience?
Have you made sketches? written down ideas? please do so, as a draft... we really need to move on now!

and now, to all
I was expecting to meet with you tomorrow at school... but we just have been informed that the school will remain closed until next week.
For the ones in BKK and willing to, i still offer to give physical tutorials (very much needed for the ones who do not post anything...)
Please let me know if
yes/no
where
when

Thank you and good luck!

Pimmy's flooding something concept

Sorry for late post, water was approaching my house.

Updates of Prompt's work

This is the updates of my research still a long way to go but I hope that this will make everything more clearer.

These are my researches up until now. I have now know what path that I will be  working on.
And my proposal will be base on the idea of political force, in this case Thai government in the way that they creates an image of themselves so that people will believe in it, during this flooding situation. [something around this]

What do you think??

Prompt Udomdech

:D

aj camille! it takes me forever to post this successfully let-alone to upload ONE picture because of the internet problem im having right now (possibly a consequence of the flood). So the work might be posted a little late.

Regards

These is list of my three design concepts.
There are almost related to another, but you could probably find differences between these :)

dry house offer

Dears,

If you, your family, friends or anyone you know is looking for a dry place to stay in Bangkok, i am about to start renting a shop-house on soi Trok Saphan Yao, near the memorial bridge,
here on the map

Yes it is located just by the river but so far the street is not flooded, and at least 3 entire floors will remain dry (then the problem would be access)

Please let me know if this can be of any help.

work

Dears,

As you know, today was originally supposed to be a review...
Therefore i am asking each one of you

to post before tomorrow 5pm:

formally presented updates about
- your researches
- your proposal
- and the form (media) your project will take

This will be evaluated as part of the development of the project.

Good luck with all - if you are stuck in your project, post and ask for advice; i can give clear directions to everyone if having to deal with all this is too difficult for you now, but i would prefer (and you would do much better) if you can develop your ideas and intentions yourselves.

Pascal's triangle

started by number 1, then the next number is created by adding 2 numbers above together

Patterns within triangle

Horizontal sum is also power of 2 / Geometric sequences

The line is also power of 11

Also the triangle performs a fibonacci number sequence as well

I find this system interesthing because of its performance of presenting many sequences within a triangle itself. I think this can be related to number games and how it organizes the game board which can then be lead to design of space. The space prganization can be somehow related to arrange of numbers in series or sequences. Since I've found relation between numbers and shapes ( from Pythagoreans theory) maybe i can use the theory and adapt into numerology belief of each number? The main number that people believe affect our lives the most is number of life path which can be calculated by adding all numbers of birth date/ month/ and year together. Then after getting a single digit, the number can be translated by different meaning due to numerology belief of numbers.

Any suggestion please :)

Also im working on my family's belief of number as a case study. Will post it later

pae's more research

I tried to researach more on relationships between numbers and shapes, geometry, and there are!!

Pythagoreans were the first kind that discovered the relationship which they adored numbers, but back then they knew only just positive whole numbers
In Pythagoreans number and symbolism method, they classified numbers into 2 types: masculine and feminine. In which odd numbers are masculine and evens are feminie. The reason why odds are masculine because they believed that odd numbers are stronger than evens. Here are why:

- when divided, even numbers have nothing in the center (unlike odd)

- odd+even = odd

- 2 evens can never produce an odd, while 2 odds can produce aneven

Also the Pythagoreans especially liked number 10 which they introduced Tetractys, a set of four things

Gnomons (related to previous project, maybe?)

For Pythagoreans, gnomons were the odd integers/ the masculine numbers. BY starting with the monad, 1, the sum of it and any consecutive number of gnomonss is a square number

1 + 3 = 4

1 + 3 + 5 = 9

1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16

Pythagoreans famous example of connection between numbers and shapes is Pythagora's theorem, where right triangle is created due to ralation of adjacent sides to their hypotenuse.

a squared*b squared = c squared. Also they discovered a method of finding all the triples of whole numbers which could form the sides of such right triangles known as Pythagorean triads or triples

Later, they discovered that whole numbers and their ratios semmed mysteriously connected to ' pleasing intervals of sound' from a vibrating string. Within these ratios. 1/2, 3/4, 2/3, etc, they can produce pleasing resonaces of chords that are appealing to human ear because they seem to be the fundemental importance of sound. By using these ratios, perfect chords, pitches, and notes of sound are created.

They believed that what is pleasing to the ear is also pleasing to the eye and the mind as well.

Due to all grammatical or logical interconnection of these unexpected discoveries, Pythagoreans and his folloowers infer that ' All is number'

The invention of number was simply because of a need to keep account of sheep, leading to further kind of numbers which we called mathematics. Because of mathematics and numbers, they allowed people to explore new horizons: to fly, to walk on the moon, to go into deep space, etc. Then some questions aroused from these facts.

If the language of number was a human invention to faciliate human affairs (count sheep), why should this mathematicsl language be one which the Univeres apparently not only understands, but utself speaks?

Example of involvement of numbers in art

The painting concerns a remarkable equation discovered by Swiss mathematical genius, Leonhard Euler. Euler found an unexpected connection between pi and integers from 1 to infinity. It was unexpected because pi is not defined as a number but interm of circles
From Pythagorean theories above, Euler's equation is like a mathematical yinyang sign. It finds a perfect balance between a digital world on the left ( integers) and an undivided continuum on the right (circle's seamless curve)

In the painting, the artist wanted to reflect the thought that Euler's small but powerful equation seemed to conjure up. For instance, a relationship between numbers and circles or geometries then applied to the form of landscape: mountains and sea whcih they in one way opposite but also similar in a way (connected) where mountains are static and sea is dynamic

The artist tried to show that things which appear to be opposite from one point of view can also be connected from another valid point of view. Also representing a symphonic of sea becoming mountains, and the other way around, of sea and mountains precipitating out of togetherness into separate entities.

Why base 10 number is used?

There are many number-base systems were invented such as base2, base12, or base16. Base 2 number uses only 0 and 1 integer to run all the system and mainly use with computer programs. Apparently, base 12 system seems to be very practical because it can be divided by manny numbers while base 10 have less. Also base 12 is somehow used in today's world. Days and nights are measure in 12- hour block with subdivided into 60 minutes and minutes into 60 seconds. All divisible by 12

Therefore, the only main rean we use base 10 number system is because we have 10 fingers
Duedecimal multiplication system

Pythagoreans represented numbers by Pattern of dots. Result of arranging pebbles into patterns

Therefore 9 pebbles can be arranged in 3 row*3 columns

O O O

O O O

O O O

and 10 pebbles can be arranged in 4 rows

O

O O

O O O

O O O O

square numbers can all be subcivided by a diagonal line into 2 triangular numbers, therefore square numbers is always the sum of 2 triangular numbers

Common number patterns

1.Arithmetic sequences --> made by adding same value each time

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 where comon difference is 2

2. Geometric sequences --> made by multiplying same value each time

2, 4, 5, 16, 32 multiplying by 2

Special sequences

1. Triangular numbers --> generated from a pattern of dots which form a triangle

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21

2. Squared numbers --> next number is made by squaring by its position number

( example 2nd number is 2 squared)

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36

3. Cube numbers --> next number is made by 3 times of its position number

1, 8, 27, 64, 125

4. Fibonacci numbers --> adding the 2 numbers infromt together

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...

Virtual Reality

I am researching on vertical limit --- up to how high human can survive/breathe.
This along with other factors will define the height of the structure. Then it will go on to more of a fictional approach. Virtual Reality is what I think I will be focusing on.

VIRTUAL REALITY
-3D computer generated environment
-immersive environment which people can interact with
-used in many fields such as military, education, healthcare, entertainment, etc.

Virtual Reality Immersion
-feeling of involvement
-"telepresence" a sensation of being elsewhere
-user forgets about real world scenario, situation, and immerses into world of imagination, adventure, exploration.

Virtual Reality and Scientific Visualization
Communicating abstract concepts to audience through visual format. In this case=higher altitude & outer space.

1.Semi-immersive environment
2.Full immersive environment

1.Semi-Intensive Virtual Reality Environment
-the aim is for the person to become unaware of their surroundings to extent that they assume a new identity.
-often consists of large, concave screen, projection system and monitor and high end computer graphics.
-no need to wear virtual reality gear and is still aware of the real world outside the virtual environment.

Computer Generated Imagery (CGI)
-application of 3D computer graphics to special effects in art, video games, films, simulators.
-visual scenes may be either static or dynamic
-can be viewed from multiple perspectives

2.CAVE Fully Immersive Virtual Reality
-cube-like space in which images are displayed by a series of projectors

Cave set up
-rear projection wall
-down projection floor
-speakers at different angles
-tracking sensors in the walls
-sound/music
-video

The person wears a pair of virtual reality glasses or HDM which displays 3d image.

CAVE Interaction
"telepresence" = interaction+immersion --- person can literally lose themselves within the virtual environment
Haptic Interaction = vibrations and other forms of movement accompanied by sound, video, images

Ambience and Atmosphere
-continuos usage will create a sense of deep immersion in the mind of user
-however latency/time lag should be less than 50 milliseconds
-in good environment, user forgets everything surrounding him and starts to believe it as his real world

Pimmy's flooding shelter concept

I analyse my four animals: pigeons, squirrels, turtles, and fish.
PIGEONS
SQUIRRELS

TURTLES

FISH
The significance and abilities of the four animals
Pigeon: flying, roosting, nesting, gathering around human (ask for feeding)
Squirrel: seeing (front/side/above without moving their heads), jumping as parachute
Turtle: shelter; carapace and plaston, neck folding into shell, hiding from predators in shallow pond by having the eyes and nostrils closed to the top of the head, submerging because they breath the air and using papille for being underwater.
Fish: respiration (gills), fins, fish eye lenses, conservation, shoal.

I'm thinking about making something like shelter or some devices to help the flooding case by using some of those four animals abilities as the concepts.

Tutorials tomorrow

Dears,
i have two options for tomorrow's tutorials:
- For those who are still around and can make it, we will have a physical meeting either at school (would be better for attending the seminar afterwards) or at TCDC (or else?)
- For those who escaped already or cannot leave their house, we can have a skype meeting at 4 pm - if you cannot you will email your work and explanations before 5pm.

Each of you please let me know your situation and preference so that i can plan ahead.
If you have other suggestions for place for physical meeting, please suggest. Ideally i would prefer this option for all. And we will all meet together.

Noc's

This's what I've recorded over the pass few days. Hope it'll be helpful for the project. I will try to link it with what we have discussed earlier about the ways of intangible communication. Please give me sometime to go on with my research. Will update as soon as possible.

16/10

I know the water is coming but it won't be fast and we have so much time left to be prepared.

17/10

2 am : it's still dry. I'd sleep tight and leave for school in the morning

4.30 am : Woken up by mom before time. She was so shocked and I ran to a window to see the outside. The village's walls collapsed down and water kept coming in non-stop. Water is a little below my knees. Dad and mom quickly drove cars out to keep them somewhere safer. It was so chaotic in the house, everyone was moving around to keep the house safe. Apparently, all the sandbags we have were already useless.

5.30am : The water height was already above my knees. it's filling up the lake behind my house. Having disabled grands and a small brother made us more worried about how we could evacuate them out before it's too late. Dad was so nervous and scared. There was no way we could save everything in here. Grandpa walked around trying to be helpful but he got dad so pissed.

7am : A truck from dad's office came to rescue us. It was supposed to be for moving furniture out but the water was already at my hip and it was a tough work that we had to give up

8am: . Grandpa and my little brother were then evacuated out. It was just like a movie scene, dead cars on the road and people moving out trying to survive. It was even more chaotic outside. The road which usually took us 5 minutes to reach to the main road now took us an hour. Other houses along the way out were all in the same condition. People were not leaving their homes because worrying about their belongings.

12am : Water had reached my chest height. We failed to block it from coming into the house. Dad moved paralyzed grandma out by a boat to hospital.

4pm : Water didn't fail to stop increasing. It was tiring and we lost hope to keep the place safe. Had a hard time deciding to abandon home. Rescue team got us out from the house. Still couldn't believe this's real. Not seeing this with my own eyes, I wouldn't know it could be this bad.

8pm : All safe. Very quiet and tense environment. Only hearing sound from TV, listening to updates.

18/10

6am : woken up by dad's panic and everyone became panic.

10am : In school with thoughts about home. Tried not to worry since there's nothing better we could do now.

2pm : never felt this excited to get back home again.

4pm : Water rose, emerging more area and more chaotic surrounding. Felt like the world was ending. People crying over their losses.

5pm : Very unusual view of my own house. Dad didn't dare to come. Tried to grab as much belongings as I could. Grandpa kept calling to find his belongings under the water. Hopeless and helpless.

10pm : Back to the city without dad who was looking after our the-next-property-to-go. Like living another life from a few hours ago. Which is the reality? Scared to know what's going to happen the next morning

19/10

6am : First morning of the week without disturbed mind.

10am : Felt nervous without updating news

1pm : thought it could be a little relaxing afternoon but got a call from dad to stock food for 15 days!

9pm : I know dad is sad and hopeless. It's already a crisis period. I am told to be standby all the time. There's no good sign for the situation to get better.

20/10

5am : Dad and mom rushed out. Our company and cars are already under water.

8pm : Spent the day unpacking things from home and taking care of grandpa and little brother who need to be assisted almost all the time. Exhausted but to think about it, we are still luckier than many others.

21/10

9am : Can't imagine about future to come. Water is still rising and spreading. Got upset by what's going on. Can't wait for it to end.

12am : Victim-going-to-be is more mentally disturbed than the victims. Starting to become a consultant for people who are about to be flooded!

2pm : Grandpa couldn't endure living in this limited space anymore. He moved to Kanchanaburi. Left with little brother to be taken care of now.

22/10

My turn today to stay overnight with grandma at our last office in Rama 2, another danger zone!

23/10

Dad and mom went home again. Water still keeps increasing and became bad water. Boat will soon not be able to get into the house.

Situation is getting worse and worse. More people are suffering. Not enough helping hands. People in the city really don't know what is really happening outside there.

24/10

Quite settled after a week of trying to get things back into places. Trying to live normally but have to admit that it's not normal and water might be coming to greet me again here in Bangkok.
